Divorce Poem
I believe I’m saving you
by leaving
because to repair a broken heart
takes a tender inner focus
and a dropping of all lies—
I will leave you with nothing
but yourself.
Listen
I’m 56 today.
My ex says I’m too old now.
He’d never date me.
When I mention this to a friend
she lifts her palms
as if hoping to catch rain.
My god, you’re a spring chicken.
Then she cups my face.
Listen to those who’ve lived long, full lives.
Listen to those who are happy.
